The free iPhone app, Hotel Tonight, allows users to browse and book that-night-only hotel rooms in 28 U.S. cities. A recent article in Bloomberg Businessweek explains the phenomenon behind last-minute booking and how this app, which has been downloaded more than one million times since its January release, appeals to what the author calls "a new breed of traveler who waits until the last minute to book a bed."

According to the article, the San Francisco-based Hotel Tonight recently received funding from venture firm Battery Ventures, and now has competition from Priceline and Expedia's new last-minute mobile booking apps.
