Marriott to open second Autograph in San Diego with Hotel Republic

Hotel Republic San Diego is preparing to debut mid-October as the city's newest boutique luxury hotel property within Marriott International’s repertoire of Autograph Collection Hotels. Located at 421 West B Street in downtown’s civic district, Hotel Republic will provide guests with an insider experience of San Diego through artisans, amenities and local culinary talent.

Hotel Republic stands on the historic site of the original San Diego Steam Laundry company building, which was built by Swedish immigrants in the late 19th century. Now in 2017, following a top-to-bottom renovation—and a deliberate transformation from the former W Hotel to the Renaissance San Diego Hotel by owner Rockpoint Group and management company HEI Hotels & Resorts—Hotel Republic will act as a new social and business hub within San Diego.

Hotel Republic is partnering with a San Diego-based hospitality firm The Patio Group to develop three dining experiences within the hotel: Topside Terrace Kitchen & Bar, a city view rooftop bar and lounge; Trade, a classically chic cocktail bar and restaurant; and Patio Marketplace, a quick-service casual, street side café. Implementing an everything-made-in-house credo and a menu of sustainably sourced, seasonal ingredients, executive chef, Amol Thanky (San Francisco: The St. Regis, Restaurant Gary Danko), will prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner service daily, as well as late night bites. Visitors can enjoy happy hour at select in-house concepts and weekend brunch al fresco at Topside Terrace. The Patio Group’s culinary and beverage programs will integrate with in-room dining, and its locally roasted, small-batch coffee brand, Swell Coffee Co., will be available to guests daily.

The 19-story, 258-room hotel was designed by San Diego-based Bluemotif Architecture and Los Angeles interior design studio Forchielli Glynn. The hotel's ceilings are dotted with driftwood chandeliers, while communal spaces are furnished in contemporary neutral tones and natural leathers and include live edge parota-wood communal tables, coffee tables fabricated from reclaimed solid elm and indigo-blue accents.

Hotel Republic’s creative coastal expression extends into 16,000 square feet of flexible event and meeting space, the VIP Marriott Rewards Veranda Lounge, as well as the hotel’s expansive guestrooms—which range from a 1,250-square-foot presidential suite to the city view king rooms and doubles.

Guests as well as nearby residents will be invited to partake in a morning yoga practice on Topside’s outdoor deck and can pack light, and each room will come equipped with a branded Hotel Republic yoga mat. The hotel will be outfitted with beach cruiser bicycles for guests to explore the neighborhood, and a social calendar may be filled with events ranging from wine tastings with regional producers and renowned sommeliers, to local artist exhibits and installations, culinary and cocktail classes, live performances and more.

Hotel Republic is located at 421 West B Street in downtown San Diego. Currently under operation as the Renaissance San Diego Hotel, once the final stages of renovation are complete in early October the property will see a full rebrand and transition to Hotel Republic. This will be Autograph Collection’s second independent hotel in San Diego, joining the Pier South Resort in Imperial Beach.
