Global hotel construction pipeline sees minor boost

The global construction pipeline currently stands at 12,714 hotel projects with 2,139,002 guestrooms, up seven percent by hotel projects year-over-year, according to data from Lodging Econometrics.

There are 5,952 hotel projects with 1,115,288 guestrooms under construction, up 8 percent by hotel projects YOY. The number of hotel projects scheduled to start construction in the next 12 months rose six percent to 3,988 hotel projects with 584,433 guestrooms. Meanwhile, there are 2,774 hotel projects with 439,281 guestrooms in the early planning stage, up five percent YOY.

Marriott International is the leading franchise company in the global construction pipeline in terms of project count. The company has a pipeline of 2,381 hotel projects with 398,238 guestrooms planned worldwide. Hilton Worldwide follows Marriott with 2,180 hotel projects and 322,857 guestrooms. InterContinental Hotels Group is ranked third with 1,600 hotel projects and 234,807 guestrooms. AccorHotels Group comes in fourth with 781 hotel projects and 140,396 guestrooms while Choice Hotels is ranked last with 684 hotels and 55,507 guestrooms.

While Marriott has the largest global pipeline for a hotel company, IHG's Holiday Inn Express has the largest global pipeline for a brand. Holiday Inn Express has 709 hotel projects with 86,836 guestrooms planned worldwide. Hilton's Hampton Inn & Suites ranked second with 599 hotel projects and 75,642 guestrooms. Marriott's Fairfield Inn finally comes in third place with 357 hotel projects and 38,826 guestrooms. Choice's Comfort brand has the fourth largest pipeline with 232 hotel projects and 19,231 guestrooms. Accor's Ibis comes in last with 156 hotel projects and 22,361 guestrooms.
