Laundry thread

23 Dec, 2008

At a hotel a few weeks ago, I felt the towel I used just didn't have a fresh smell about it. So I wrote an operations story about the scent of laundry- which also lead me to topics of green initiatives in detergent and worker safety. Are there any laundry issues, either from this department or in general, that you feel unsure about or that you need more of an explanation of? Or is there a trend happening that maybe we missed?

I just spoke with Angela Greer, GM of the Radisson Hotel Bloomington by Mall of America, about changes in her hotel's daily operations and she said her hotel has looked into outsourcing its laundry and has started sending its linens to be laundered by a third party. This has saved the 403-room hotel costs of labor, chemicals, detergents, energy and water. She believes over the year, this initiative will save her hotel nearly $30,000. Is this something more hotels should look into?
