After delay, London Edition back on14 Feb, 2012 By: David Eisen
Hot off the press, Shepherd Construction has secured a $50-million contract to renovate and convert the grade II listed historic Berners Hotel in London's Fitzrovia neighborhood, which will then open in 2013 as the London Edition, Marriott International's lifestyle brand in partnership with Ian Schrager.
Work at the site is a resumption of sorts after Shepherd Construction walked off the project nearly two years ago following a dispute with then owner JJW Hotels & Resorts, who, according to Construction Enquirer, is now being sued by Shepherd for unpaid bills for work under the original £31-million contract. JJW Hotels & Resorts fell into administration in August 2010.
The hotel, which has been closed since 2006, was bought by Marriott in November 2010 and will become The London Edition when it opens in 2013. The hotel will be one of six Edition hotels that are scheduled to be operating across three continents by 2015.
The building, which was originally constructed in 1835 as five separate houses, will have the façade restored to its former self and the interior extensively refurbished to create a 175-room hotel. Shepherd is due to complete work on the project by December 2012.
The project, we hear, will use the turnkey approach offered by Shepherd’s Built Environment Division.
Mark Tant, Shepherd Construction’s managing director for the South Division commented, "It is fantastic for us to be back on-site on a project that we can now see through to completion. We’re delighted to be working with Marriott International and look forward to seeing the London Edition open in 2013."
Shepherd recently put the finishing touches on a $70-million refurbishment and restoration of Rockliffe Hall at Hurworth, near Darlington, which is now a luxury resort. This is the first hotel project in London for Shepherd Construction.
