IHG, Shimao Group to open new InterContinental in China

IHG and China-based developer Shimao Group are on track to open the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland in China in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Shimao Group is developing the new InterContinental in a deep pit of a former quarry in Southwest Shanghai. IHG will manage the property, which is mostly underground.

The 18-story hotel has two floors above ground and 16 below ground, including two floors underwater. The hotel has 336 guestrooms and suites across approximately 15 acres.

The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is part of a deal IHG and Shimao Group signed in October 2008. The partners agreed to open six new hotels under three brands in four cities by 2013.

They planned to add a total of 2,100 guestrooms IHG's development pipeline in Greater China. The remaining properties are the 330-room InterContinental Beijing City Centre, the 360-room InterContinental Fuzhou, the 460-room Crowne Plaza Shaoxing, the 310-room Holiday Inn Shaoxing and the 260-room Holiday Inn Mudanjiang.

The hotel will be IHG's latest addition to the portfolio in Shanghai, China. The company has a total of 41 hotels operating in the city.

IHG currently operates an additional five InterContinental hotels in Shanghai: InterContinental Hotels Shanghai Hongqiao NECC, InterContinental Hotels Shanghai Expo, InterContinental Hotels Shanghai Pudong, InterContinental Hotels Shanghai Ruijin and InterContinental Hotels Shanghai Jing'An. The others operate under the Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Indigo and Crowne Plaza brands.

Six IHG hotels are currently under development in Shanghai. These will join the Hotel Indigo and Holiday Inn Express brands.
