Ameristar to build $500 million casino in Springfield, Mass.

25 Jan, 2012

A Nevada company today said that it has closed on a deal to buy 41 acres off Page Boulevard in Springfield, Mass., for a possible $500 million casino resort. Ameristar Casinos of Las Vegas purchased the land for $16 million from an affiliate of the O'Connell Development Group of Holyoke.

Westinghouse, which once employed approximately 7,000 people in manufacturing operations at the site, vacated the property in 1970, Ameristar said. The site recently had been vacant.

The buildings on the site have been razed, and the property is being delivered to Ameristar ready for construction, the company said. Ameristar’s development plans are preliminary but are expected to include a casino, slot machines, a variety of table games, a luxury hotel, several dining venues, retail outlets, entertainment and meeting space and structured parking.

Ameristar is set to compete with the Mohegan Sun of Connecticut, which is planning a casino for Palmer, Mass., and MGM Resorts of Las Vegas, which is planning a casino resort for Brimfield, Mass.

A new state law authorizes up to three casino resorts around the state including one for Western Massachusetts.
