Doubletree by Hilton planned for Evansville, Ind.

A tourism official from Evansville, Ind. is calling for a proposed hotel for the city to remain in the 250-room range.

The current tentative plan calls for a 253-room Doubletree by Hilton to be the centerpiece of a $70-million development which also includes an apartment tower, retail and restaurant space, a parking garage, connections between Downtown facilities and storage space for the Ford Center.

Total city government investment would be $37.5 million, with $20 million supporting hotel construction, but negotiations are ongoing between the administration of Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and developer HCW.

Evansville Convention & Visitors Bureau Director Bob Warren told the civic group that the convention hotel is projected to increase hotel bookings in the city by 40 percent and bring meeting business back to the city. The Executive Inn between 2004 and 2009 generated more than 100,000 room nights despite being in poor condition, Warren said.
