Design Research Studio designs interiors of Mondrian London

Morgans Hotel Group opened its newest hotel, Mondrian London at Sea Containers, a 359-room luxury hotel on London's South Bank. This is the first Mondrian-branded hotel outside the US.

With interiors designed by Design Research Studio, under the direction of Tom Dixon, Mondrian London includes a handcrafted copper hull sweeping from the entrance through the lobby into the heart of the hotel. Dixon’s design is reminiscent of a transatlantic 1920s liner, with a dose of 1980s post-modernism reference.

There are various rooms available in the property. The standard rooms and suites have queen or king beds, custom designed dimmable lighting, bespoke furniture and an oversized marble bathroom complete with free standing bath, rainfall shower and MALIN+GOETZ amenities. Design items include a drip wall painting hand crafted by Dixon, as well as his signature wingback chair that appears in the suite’s separate living area. Many of the suites can also interconnect to a second bedroom.

Meanwhile, Mondrian London’s apartment measures 1,200 square feet and has custom designed gold light installations and bespoke furniture. The apartment offers city and river views from multiple angles. This exclusive space contains a separate corner master suite, and oversized bathroom featuring freestanding bath and rainfall shower, as well as a sitting room, dining room with a table for up to 12 guests and a wet bar. The apartment can also be constructed to have two bedrooms.

In addition to the 359 guestrooms and suites, which draw design inspiration from the transatlantic narrative, the hotel also has a 200-seat restaurant, Sea Containers, helmed by chef Seamus Mullen. It similarly has multiple bar spaces, including Dandelyan and a soon-to-be-announced rooftop bar.

Accompanying the food and beverage offerings, the hotel has over 5,500 square feet of event venues, including a 56-seat screening room.

Additionally, the hotel has the Agua Bathhouse & Spa.

Morgans Hotel Group is credited as the creator of the first "boutique" hotel.
