Edge of Architecture, Arquiteg, QB Construction redesign InterContinental-San Juan

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) completed the second phase of the renovation of its InterContinental San Juan property in Puerto Rico. The property is part of IHG’s portfolio of nearly 180 hotels worldwide, under its InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brand.

The project included upgrades to 398 guestrooms and suites (completed during its first phase in 2012), and a complete re-imagination of public spaces in 2013 — all while the hotel remained in operation. The second phase of the project was designed and constructed in just 10 months, concluding in December last year.

The John Hardy Group managed the $22.25-million renovation, led by Peter K. Speth, senior project director for The John Hardy Group.

Together with design firm Edge of Architecture, local architect Arquiteg and contractor QB Construction, the John Hardy Group facilitated the project from the initial stages until completion.

With the most extensive renovations occurring on the building’s exterior and lobby lounge interior, the InterContinental San Juan property was refreshed to celebrate the beaches of San Juan with a soft palette of colors. Improvements to the hotel’s revenue-generating socialization zones included an indoor/outdoor bar with a fire pit.
