Eva Martinez designs interiors of Picasso's studio hotel

The Serras opened in a building that housed Pablo Picasso's first studio on Passeig de Colom in Barcelona. Overlooking the Gothic Old Town and Port Vell Marina, the luxury boutique hotel is situated in a neo-classical 1846 building. Located near Las Ramblas, the property is the first five-star property on the waterfront in central Barcelona.

The hotel has 30 rooms and suites, with interiors by Eva Martinez. A rooftop bar and pool overlooks the marina, and the restaurant is run by Michelin-starred chef Marc Gascons.

The building dates from 1846 and the original Neo-Classical façade designed by Francesc Daniel Molina remains intact, with a more modern aesthetic towards the back of the hotel.

Inside, Spanish designer Eva Martinez created an elegant and fresh feel, with a look combining current New York and Modern Catalan styles. Martinez incorporated local influences into the design, such as the hydraulic tiles, traditionally used as flooring in the homes of Barcelona, and now playing a central role as headboards of the beds, with varying motifs depicting different areas of the city. Martinez also integrated iron and wood to reflect the district’s industrial past.

Luxurious elements include: Hypnos mattresses, used by the British Royal Family; Hansgrohe showers; and Malin and Goetz amenities and candles in the suites.

There are 30 rooms and suites. The suites can be re-arranged depending on the guest’s requirements. There is also a Picasso Suite, where the artist painted the view of Basilica de La Mercè, just around the corner from the hotel.

The Serras boasts a rooftop overlooking the marina, complete with a small pool and an informal bar. In addition, all of the rooms have balconies, with a range of views.

For dining, the property has a restaurant with an open kitchen and grill. This is helmed by Marc Gascons. There is also a library on the Mezzanine and overlooking the lobby and restaurant.

The Serras is owned by Jordi Serra.
