Jean-Michel Gathy teams with GHM for The Chedi Andermatt

General Hotel Management’s (GHM) has announced that it teamed with Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston Architects for its first European hotel project known as The Chedi Andermatt & Residences, located in Andermatt in the heart of the Swiss Alps in the Urseren Valley.

Envisioned as a year-round resort destination comprising of residential apartments, luxury chalets, 18-hole championship golf course, retail village, hotels, sports center and leisure facilities, The Chedi is part of the larger Andermatt Swiss Alps development project.

For the design, Gathy was said to have been motivated by the location of the property so that The Chedi Andermatt & Residences was sustainably designed and executed, using locally sourced materials and expertise.  The property pays tribute to traditional Swiss architecture, while at the same time elevating the concept.

The exterior echoes Swiss chalet-style, imbued with contemporary features like the timber façade, and pitched roof and stone embellishment that provide a classic frame for the incorporation of glass. The 30-meter check-in bar transforms a traditional reception into a place to meet, mingle and mix drinks; while also departs from a formal lobby by featuring fireplace and large loungers.

In the 104 guest rooms, striated woodwork sits next to monochromatic Rubens-inspired murals, while the authentic timber-clad walls behind the beds are dotted with antique lanterns to emulate a starry night sky.   Giving life to the concept of “adjustable living” are such features as the double shutter windows that accommodate in-and-out fireplaces, thereby allowing guests to enjoy the ambient heat from both within their room and out on their terrace.

The property’s open-plan approach, lofty ceilings, timber pillars and carefully positioned light-magnifying glass surfaces were augmented by the tapestry of wood, rich earthy hues, and layered soft-furnishing.  According to Gathy, he set out to create a hotel that would pay homage to the past while also continually evolving, not only as the development progressed, but from day to night, season to season and person to person. To achieve this, he made use of glass to ensure the changing vistas became part of the hotel.

The Chedi also offers seven dining venues; a spa; temperature-controlled outdoor lap pool and indoor pool; hydrothermal baths; gym, yoga and personal training; Finnish saunas; sol steam baths; and 10 treatment rooms.
