SODO Builders selects Oldcastle Modular to build bathroom pods for LA Marriott

SODO Builders LA, general contractor for the $168-million LA Marriott Hotel in Calif., selected Oldcastle Modular to factory build 393 prefabricated Eggrock bathroom pods for the hotel that includes 175 Courtyard by Marriott rooms and 218 Marriott Residence Inn rooms.

Marriott’s two hotel brands are located within the 23-story building in the LA Live neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles. The building, located at 901 West Olympic Boulevard, across from the Los Angeles Convention Center, is approximately 240 feet tall, with the helipad extending to approximately 250 feet tall.

By using prefabrication techniques, and prefabricated bathroom pods, the building team was able to compress the project’s original construction schedule by more than two months. The LA Marriott prefabricated bathrooms were assembled in a local manufacturing facility, shipped to the site, and slid into the structure from the side, prior to erection of the facade.

According to Steve Foley, senior superintendent of SODO Builders, the use of prefabricated bathroom pods facilitated a faster vertical process through the building. This saved the contractor more than nine weeks by incorporating prefabricated bathroom pods by Eggrock.

Oldcastle Modular’s prefabrication technique combines the latest design and manufacturing technologies within a controlled production environment to produce prefabricated bathroom pods for multi-unit construction projects. The result is a project with no bathroom punch list to manage on-site.

Each bathroom was constructed using Marriott approved and specified products per the client’s request.

The new Marriott, owned by American Life, is situated among California’s L.A. LIVE district. It is a four million square foot sports, entertainment and residential district adjacent to the Los Angeles Convention Center. In the heart of the city, L.A. LIVE offers residents, the business community and tourists sports, music, film, dining, special events and accommodations.

The LA Live Marriott hotel is seeking to attain a minimum of LEED Silver by the US Green Building Council.
