Tange Associates designs Seoul’s YIBD block C1-20 building

Tange Associates will design the YIBD block C1-20 building as part of Seoul’s Yongsan International Business District (YIBD).

The building is designed to mediate between Seoul’s Retail Valley and the surrounding office buildings, and will demarcate the path from the Han River through the Retail Valley all the way to Yongsan Station.

The building provides a gross area of 628,612 square feet on 25 floors and at a height of 541 feet. It has educational institutions, a “synergy floor” for events and exhibitions, a three-story fitness center, offices, spaces for private clinics and a three-star restaurant that opens up to the roof top terraces.

Its multi-faceted facade frame embraces the building’s aluminum-glass skin in an upward-spiraling motion. At night, the facade turns into a giant media wall displaying digital artwork.

The building’s design was by Paul Tange, Yasuhiro Ishino and Michael Thanner, for Seoul’s Dreamhub Ltd. and Yongsan Development Co.
