Cox & King's Meininger Hotels to develop new Lisbon property

Meininger Hotels, a subsidiary of Cox & Kings, signed an agreement with project developer Nelson Canal Portugal to develop a new Meininger hotel in Lisbon's Santos quarter.

The 121-room hotel will be on the Tejo River waterfront, and is slated to begin operating at the end of 2019. The property will be located near the Lisbon Art Center & Studios, the Barraca Theater, the IADE art university, the Time Out Market food court and market hall, the city center of Lisbon and the Cascais beach.

The two companies will convert a former office building into the new six-floor Meininger Hotel.

"With the project in Lisbon we enter a new and important market. Lisbon is a beautiful city and has enjoyed increasing popularity with travelers from Portugal and across Europe for years. We have been looking for a suitable property for some time and are therefore very happy about this new project," Hannes Spanring, CEO of Meininger Hotels, said in a statement.

This latest addition to the Meininger Hotels pipeline increases the number of hotel projects to 16. Meininger already signed these new hotels in Berlin, Bordeaux, Brussels, Budapest, Dresden, Geneva, Glasgow, Heidelberg, Lyon, Milan, Munich, Paris, Rome, Saint Petersburg and Zurich. The company's main focus region for development is Europe. However, Meininger is also eyeing development opportunities in North America and South Asia. The new properties will join Meininger's portfolio of 20 hotels in Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Frankfurt/Main, Hamburg, Leipzig, London, Milan, Munich, Salzburg and Vienna.

Meininger recently signed a 160-room hotel in the center of Glasgow with investor LGIM Real Assets in March 2018. Architectural firm NORR is designing the hotel, which is opening in 2020 and will be on the first floor of a building with retail space. The property will be near the Queen Street Train Station, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Royal Concert Hall.
