Upper-midscale leads Asia-Pac hotel-construction pipeline

The Asia-Pacific hotel pipeline has 2,109 projects with 470,650 rooms under construction as of July, representing a 27 percent year-over-year increase in the number of rooms in the final phase of the development pipeline, according to STR data.

A majority of the region’s rooms in construction are in three segments: the upscale segment has 123,692 rooms underway, up 23.2 percent from last year; the upper-midscale pipeline has 112,400 rooms, a 47.6 percent increase over 2018 (the segment is up 41.9 percent in terms of hotels.); and upper-upscale has 102,043 rooms underway for a 14.1 percent increase.

Five countries reported more than 20,000 rooms under construction. China led with 244,233 rooms, representing 9.4 percent of existing supply, followed by Japan (43,012 rooms, 6.3 percent of existing supply). Vietnam followed with 29,625 rooms (29.4 percent of existing supply), succeeded by Indonesia (26,694 rooms, 7.3 percent of existing supply) and India (24,801 rooms, 8.4 percent of existing supply).
