A six-story Homewood Suites by Hilton is coming to Cape Canaveral, Fla. The 153-room hotel is scheduled to open late next year at a total cost of $17 million. At nearly 65-feet tall, it would be the tallest building on State Road A1A in Cape Canaveral, Florida Today reports.
Construction on the property adjacent to AJT Professional Complex along westbound SR A1A, next to Port Canaveral, is set to begin in September.
The developer, LBA Properties, reportedly chose Cape Canaveral because of its proximity to beaches, attractions and the port.
"We’ve been looking at Cape Canaveral for years," Mark Robbins, director of hotel development for Dothan, Ala.-based LBA Properties, told Florida Today. "With the change in the market conditions, we think now is the correct time to pull the trigger and build a quality development."
LBA manages about 70 Hilton and Marriott hotels in the U.S.
The developer is taking advantage of changes in city code in 2012 that created an economic opportunity district along State Road A1A between the port and Columbia Drive, allowing the project to be built on property that previously would have been considered too small and was not zoned for a hotel. The new code no longer requires a hotel to be built on at least 5 acres, but the project still must have at least 150 units.
