Marriott International announced plans to double the footprint of its Edition flag, with a pipeline of 15 properties.
The company expects to open three new hotels, across three continents in 2020; in Japan, Iceland and Dubai.
The openings will take the brand to13 properties worldwide.
With two existing properties in the Asia Pacific region, Edition expected to open its first property in Japan - The Tokyo Edition Toranomon. Edition expected to expand its footprint in the Middle East with the opening of The Dubai Edition, the second hotel in the UAE following last year’s launch of The Abu Dhabi Edition. Europe was also expected to see its fourth Edition property with the launch of The Reykjavik Edition in Iceland.
Marriott International launched the Edition brand in 2007 in partnership with Ian Schrager. Schrager said of the latest additions: “All of the Edition hotels are unique, original and one of a kind, embedded with a sense of time and place”.
Schrager has described Edition Hotels as “the next chapter in the lifestyle hotel story. This brand combines the personal, intimate, individualised and unique lodging experience that Ian Schrager is known for with the global reach, operational expertise and scale of Marriott. This delicate balancing act encompasses not only great design and true innovation, but also personal, friendly, modern service and outstanding, one-of-a-kind food, beverage and entertainment offerings... all under one roof.
"Together Marriott and I have a new vision and plan to radically rethink and catapult the boutique/lifestyle category hotel into the present by capturing the spirit of the times," said Schrager.
Edition Hotels were conceived as consisting of about 150 to 200 rooms on average, with each designed to fit into their locations. Schrager was in charge of the aesthetics and marketing of the hotels, while Marriott handled development and operations. "These hotels will be an exceptional complement to our brand portfolio and will allow us to use our global platform and operational expertise to crate the first truly global branded boutique lifestyle hotel on a large scale," Marriott CEO J.W. Marriott Jr. said at the time of launch.
