Christine Neufeld, director of marketing with LSI Floors: “The quality of any product is the key factor in a successful project. Several considerations in vinyl plank flooring are the pattern repetition as well as the quality of the image. Each plank should not look identical. Ensure the pattern has a high degree of variation to mimic wood as closely as possible. A ‘registered’ pattern will further enhance the final appearance. This is where the embossing on the surface follows the pattern of the wood image beneath.
“It should also be noted that hotels are expanding the design dialogue beyond wood visuals as LVT is gaining momentum as the material of choice. This is seen particularly in the lobby areas. Vinyl that mimics large slabs of concrete is being intermixed with the faux-wood planks. Textured vinyl Tread Plate is being used in the back-of-house hallways to protect the walls and on the floors in the elevators.”
Christy Schofield, director of commercial hard surface at Durkan: “Chemistry and engineering matter. The market is absolutely flooded with resilient options and rightly so. It is critical to do your research and not be romanced by a thicker wear layer or a longer warranty. Any urethane wear layer should be enhanced with something, whether ceramic, quartz, or aluminum oxide. A basic urethane has a much higher chance to scratch, no matter the thickness. And scratching is typically the No. 1 complaint with the wood-like products. Proper furniture protection, safe transitions and choosing a color that suits the design but stands up to luggage and rock stars are good, too.”
