The words antimicrobial, antiviral and antibacterial are sometimes used interchangeably, but they shouldn’t be.
- Antimicrobial means destructive to or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, including

- Antibacterial means destructive to or inhibiting the growth of bacteria.
- Antiviral means of or relating to a substance used to prevent or treat a viral infection.
Essentially, antibacterial and antiviral products are antimicrobial. However, antimicrobial products might not necessarily be both antibacterial and antiviral. Antimicrobial is sometimes used as a “catch-all,” which can lead people to assume a product is protected against bacteria and viruses when it’s not.
