Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide is set to expand its Spanish presence with the opening of W Madrid in 2018. Owned by Merryland Inversiones, the W Madrid will be located on the Plaza de Canalejas in a 19th-century building. Notably, as Michael Wale, president of Starwood Hotels & Resorts for EMEA noted, this hotel will make Spain the only country in Europe with two Ws. Barcelona got the nation's first W in 2009 (pictured above).
The renovation of the hotel will involve what Starwood is calling "an international multi-disciplinary team" coordinated by Hong Kong-based Hospitality Solutions. Rockwell Group will oversee the project, including "a full restoration of historical elements."
Following the launches of W Hotels in Istanbul, Barcelona, St. Petersburg, London, Paris and Verbier, W Amsterdam became the seventh W Hotel in Europe when it opened in October 2015. W Hotels now has a worldwide portfolio of 46 properties and is on track to reach 75 hotels by 2020.
