Work to start on $51M Embassy Suites in Kansas City area

The Heart of America Group will break ground on a $51-million Embassy Suites & Conference Center project in Olathe, Kan. The 175,000-square-foot hotel will have 200 rooms and is scheduled to open in 2015.

The Heart of America Group, based in Illinois, will serve as its own contractor for the project, reports the Kansas City Business Journal, citing Damen Trebilcock, SVP of the firm.

The new hotel will be Heart of America's third hotel property in Olathe. In 1997, Heart of America completed a Comfort Suites hotel, which was converted into a Holiday Inn Express and Suites last year.

Heart of America also developed a Hilton Garden Inn in 2012.

The Embassy Suites & Conference Center project was announced early last year, reports the Journal, not long after the city terminated a development agreement with John Q. Hammonds Hotels.

Public financing for the project included $19.6-million in tax increment financing.
