New Mexico property adds 'hotel within a hotel'

La Fonda on the Plaza in Santa Fe, N.M., is set celebrate its upcoming centennial by opening a “hotel within a hotel:” The Terrace Inn at La Fonda. To create the Inn, the hotel reimagined its 15 Terrace suites and rooms and added a common space. The Terrace Inn has its own dedicated check-in and concierge as well as private whirlpool hot tub overlooking the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Architect Barbara Felix spearheaded the remodel project. Inspired by New Mexico’s landscapes, architecture and the cultures of the Navajo, Pueblo and Hispanic people, the rooms blend old and new.

The furnishings combine minimalistic, clean lines with historic and cultural elements and original art unique to the region, including refinished 100-year-old heart pine wood flooring. Contemporary elements include custom window sheers that incorporate the work of Crow painter Del Curfman and the cascading tiles featured in the updated showers.

Each room has a private patio or balcony that overlooks the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis de Assisi or the Loretto Chapel and the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Room sizes range from 490 to 594 square feet, while the patios and balconies range in size from 20 to 400 square feet.
