New Capella Hotel coming to Sanya, China in late 2018

Singapore-based Capella Hotel Group and Chinese developer China Gezhouba Group Real Estate are developing the Capella Sanya, which is slated to open in the fourth quarter of 2018.

The Capella Sanya will be located on the coast of Blessed Bay on Hainan Island, and will have 190 guestrooms, suites and villas once it is complete. Designers Jean-Michel Gathy and Bill Bensley designed the property.

The new Capella will be the hotel group's second property operating under this brand in China following the Capella Shanghai Jian Ye Li. Capella agreed in April 2016 to manage the hotel, which opened in March 2017. The all-villa resort opened in the Xuhui District as part of the Jian Ye Li heritage conservation site. The Capella Residences Shanghai, which is located on the site, also opened in early 2017. The resort has 55 villas while the residences have 40 apartments. The resort and residences share the site with The Gallery shopping center.

Capella's portfolio in China also includes the Han Yue Lou Hotel Nanjing, A Solís Managed Hotel in Nanjing and the 268-room Solís Guangzhou, which opened in 2017. Additional hotels in the group's Asia-Pacific pipeline are the 100-room Capella Bangkok in Thailand opening in 2018; the 65-room Capella Maldives; the 108-room Solís Ubud opening in Bali, Indonesia in 2018; and a Capella in Sydney opening by 2020.

Horst Shulze, founder of Capella Hotel Group, sold the company to the Singapore-based Kwee family in November 2017, according to a report from 4Hoteliers. The portfolio of hotels, along with the group’s Auriga Spas, joined the Kwee’s inventory of properties, which includes the Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore, the Conrad Centennial Singapore, the Regent Singapore, a Four Seasons hotel and the Capella Singapore through the real estate developer Pontiac Land Group. Shulze remained the chairman emeritus following the transaction while Nicholas Clayton took over as CEO of Capella Hotel Group.
