IHG has signed a new Six Senses luxury resort and branded residence complex for western Pennsylvania. Scheduled to open in 2028, Six Senses RiverStone Estate will occupy nearly 1,200 acres (set against more than 50 miles of trails and seven miles of riverfront) and maintain a 13,000-square-foot stone mansion first constructed in the 1820s as its anchor.
Ownership is led by Saji Daniel and Shannon McGauley Daniel who are advised by Weitzman Associates. Architecture will be overseen by Olson Kundig and interiors by Michaelis Boyd and Charles & Co. Rios, Biohabitats and Kimley-Horn will preserve the landscape of forest, meadows, hills and rivers.
Six Senses RiverStone Estate also advances the brand’s initial mainland U.S. presence with previously announced signings in Telluride, Colo.; Napa, Calif.; and along the South Carolina coast. Following the opening of Six Senses La Sagesse in April, Six Senses Grand Bahama and Six Senses Xala on the Pacific Coast of Mexico are also under development.
Six Senses RiverStone Estate is set to open in 2028.
Historic Balance
Situated on a wooded ridge where the Allegheny and Clarion rivers meet, Six Senses RiverStone Estate will be outside the Western Pennsylvania town of Foxburg, 90 minutes north of Pittsburgh, the property is close to three private airports and within driving distance of Cleveland, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York.
Anchored by a three-story stone mansion restored by the estate’s former owner, the resort’s 77 new guestrooms will be incorporated into the contours of the 1,200-acre estate, with more than 50 miles of trails and seven miles of riverfront. Forty branded residences also will be available.
The center of the property is a 13,000-square-foot stone mansion, first constructed in the 1820s as a summer home for the descendants of George Fox, after whom the nearby town of Foxburg is named. Along with updating the mansion, the developers will update a Victorian carriage house designed by Philadelphia architect Frank Furness.
Six Senses RiverStone Estate will have an art program that includes a curated art gallery and a collection of studios for an artist-in-residence program that will be led by some of the world’s foremost thought leaders in multiple art disciplines.
Wellness Focus
The 16,000-square-foot Six Senses Spa will take a high-tech, high-touch approach to wellness. The Spa will be situated within the restored stone walls of the Fox family’s English garden and will include facilities for indoor and outdoor classes—including meditation, stretching, yoga and Pilates. The resort also will have a 4,500-square-foot fitness center and a 25-meter pool.
Cuisine will emphasize local and organic produce and game. Onsite farm-to-table dining will include a specialty restaurant, a central courtyard with smaller tasting bars and the Orchard Alley pop-up experience. Maple syrup will be produced onsite from the property’s more than 5,000 maple trees.
Horses have played a central role throughout the estate’s history. The equestrian center will include an 22,000-square-foot indoor riding arena, 36 stalls with heated floors and quiet corners for equine therapy programs. Residential owners will be able to board their horses year-round, while guests and owners will also be able to access the facility’s offerings.
Beyond horses, the estate has cows, sheep, goats, donkeys, and a chicken chalet producing fresh eggs daily.
