Topping off: Salt Lake City hotel Asher Adams reaches development milestone

The Athens Group, along with its partner, Hatteras Sky, has topped off the Asher Adams hotel in downtown Salt Lake City.

This signature project features the adaptive reuse of the historic Union Pacific Depot Train Station, which first opened its doors in 1909 along with the construction of a new, eight-story guestroom tower. The Athens Group is transforming the property into a 225-room Marriott Autograph Collection hotel, the first of its kind in Salt Lake City.

The recent topping off marks the completion of the concrete structure, a significant milestone in the hotel’s construction that is being managed by Salt Lake City-based Okland Construction Company, with architectural design from HKS Architects and interior design from JNS Design.

“Asher Adams pays homage to the rich history of Salt Lake City and the Union Pacific Depot while providing locals and guests from across the globe with a luxurious and contemporary experience.” Kim Richards, president and CEO of The Athens Group, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to partner with Hatteras Sky on this adaptive re-use project. It's a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage while embracing the future.”

Named after Asher and Adams, two of the first cartographers to depict railroad routes on maps, the hotel concept is inspired by the once booming train station. The property will preserve the train station’s French empire architecture that will showcase the original stained-glass windows and oil-on-canvas murals.

Opening in the fall of 2024, Asher Adams will have a art fitness center, meeting and event spaces, a patisserie, a signature restaurant and two bars, including a specialty bar located on the second floor of the Union Pacific building with views of the city and Wasatch Mountain. The Depot is a 17,000-square-foot live entertainment venue within the hotel.

“The restoration of the Union Pacific Depot has been a labor of love, ensuring that the building's original grandeur and architectural details have been preserved. Guests will experience the perfect blend of history, luxury and modernity at Asher Adams,” Principal and Managing Director of Development for Hatteras Sky Oz Friedmann said.

Asher Adams will be within walking distance to the TRAX Blue and Green light rail stops, Delta Center—home of the Utah Jazz—and Temple Square, Salt Palace Convention Center, Salt Lake City International Airport, museums and parks. Six ski resorts are within 45 minutes of the downtown location.
