The historic Fulton Building in downtown Pittsburgh is poised to reopen this summer as The Atterbury following a multi-million-dollar redevelopment led by RLJ Lodging Trust.
The 300-room Pennsylvania hotel—which will be joining Marriott Bonvoy’s Autograph Collection—was originally constructed in 1906 by architect Grosvenor Atterbury for Carnegie Steel magnate Henry Phipps. The building sits near the Allegheny Riverfront, Market Square and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
“For more than a century, this building has reflected Grosvenor Atterbury’s belief that architecture should bring people, ideas and experiences together,” Chris Johnson, general manager of The Atterbury, said in a statement. “That original intent still guides us today. With The Atterbury, we are building on that foundation, creating a space that will feel distinctly Pittsburgh while giving each guest the freedom and inspiration to experience the city in a way that is entirely their own.”
The Design
Design plans—led by Christine Shanahan of Rockville, Md.-based HVS Design—call for a balance between preservation and modern interpretation of the Fulton Building’s original architectural features. The interiors will incorporate restored historic elements alongside contemporary materials, color palettes and residential-style furnishings.
A central feature of the hotel will be the restored skywell and grand rotunda, which will serve as a focal point of the property with a reactivated skylight, sweeping staircase and marble detailing designed to highlight the building’s historic core.
Guestrooms and suites will reflect the structure’s original layout, resulting in a range of room configurations and views. The property will also feature an integrated art program inspired by Grosvenor Atterbury and Estelle Atterbury, including portraits, historical collages and murals by local artists. Elevator lobbies throughout the hotel will highlight themes from Pittsburgh’s industrial and cultural history.
Dining and social spaces will include The Drafting Room, a contemporary American restaurant and bar offering all-day service. The Fulton Room, meanwhile, will serve as a ground-floor lounge and flexible gathering space for both guests and local visitors.
Additional meeting and event space will overlook the hotel’s rotunda and atrium and will be positioned to accommodate corporate meetings, private events and social functions in proximity to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
