CitizenM opens San Francisco hotel

The boutique CitizenM brand has made its San Francisco debut. The new CitizenM San Francisco Union Square follows CitizenM Los Angeles Downtown as the company’s second opening in California this year.

The property is opening with a photography exhibit on the exterior of its façade, a series of brightly colored, back-lit portraits on the ground floor retail space. The use of graphics, light and color to create movement in the images is meant to represent the movement and progress in CitizenM as a brand and San Francisco as a city. The installation will be live until Dec. 8.

As with all of its hotels, CitizenM will host a series of commissioned artworks and existing pieces at the San Francisco property. The collection includes a range of in-room art, wallcoverings and pieces from Neo Matloga, Rainer Fetting, Jonas Ohlsson, Lu Pingyuan, Lakwena Maciver, Samuel Albert Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III, Mark Ulriksen, t.w. five and Sharon Virtue.

The hotel will also feature a commissioned artwork by Los Angeles-based FriendsWithYou, the art collaboration between Borkson and Sandoval.

San Fran Design

CitizenM collaborated with its long-time design partner, concrete Amsterdam, on the hotel’s design, with Gensler as the local architect. The third-floor entrance evokes a lobby furnished with books, art and furniture. Styling items are meant to reflect the spirit of San Francisco. Shifting the focus away from the tech side of the city, CitizenM San Francisco Union Square’s styling and design narrative focuses on equality and inclusivity and features items with references to neighborhoods like Castro and Mission.

The 195 guestrooms are all one style with a wall-to-wall window, an extra large king-size bed and a high-definition TV with streaming capabilities. A MoodPad tablet controls the ambience, from temperature to blinds to entertainment.

The 12-story hotel also has a gym, a retail mezzanine and a rooftop terrace. The gym is located on the fourth floor and the 13th floor terrace has picnic tables and green space.

Development

The company has five new U.S. locations slated to open in 2022: CitizenM Miami World Center (projected opening Q1 2022), CitizenM Miami Brickell (projected opening Q1 2022), CitizenM Seattle Pioneer Square (projected opening Q1 2022), CitizenM Washington D.C. NoMA (projected opening Q2 2022) and CitizenM Chicago Downtown (projected opening Q4 2022).
