How a disco ball factory became a Louisville, Ky., boutique hotel

Weyland Ventures, in partnership with the Common Bond Hotel Collection, recently opened the Myriad Hotel in the Highlands district of Louisville, Ky. The 65-guestroom hotel has two restaurant and bar concepts (Paseo and Switchboard); a signature retail concept and event space, Bar Keep; a pool and lounge; and indoor and outdoor event space.

"The Myriad Hotel embodies what makes Louisville, and specifically the Highlands neighborhood, so special," Craig Pishotti, COO of Weyland Ventures and co-founder of the Common Bond Hotel Collection, said in a statement. "We wanted to create a space for both visitors and locals to escape to, a getaway to relax and unwind, where they can expect the unexpected.”

Myriad's design elements were inspired by the unique history of its site: a factory that once was responsible for creating the majority of the world's disco balls. The 1970s vibe can be seen the lobby, which has warm wood wallcoverings that evoke a funky retro feel and an installation of disco balls that hang from the ceiling. The elevator becomes a disco ball, complete with a "party button" that triggers music and dancing lights.

Designed from the ground up, the Myriad's 65 guestrooms and suites cover 15 different room styles including two bunk rooms. Featured layouts include the King Room with Balcony in which a fully furnished lanai overlooks the pool, and the Corner Suite, which consists of a king bed and separate living room with a sectional sleeper and dining table. All rooms have workstations.

Public Spaces

Paseo is the hotel’s main restaurant, overseen by Executive Chef Jeremy Frederiksen and the Common Bond Hotel Collection’s Director of Culinary Mike Wajda. The space has an indoor and outdoor courtyard setting. Switchboard (named for the telephone company that once occupied a portion of the building) is a cafe and cocktail space that that also serves grab-and-go items and provides workspace for those who make the local coffeehouse their office. The space turns into a cocktail bar in the evening, meant to evoke a New York speakeasy.

The Myriad Swim Club has a pool for guests and visitors with day beds and chaise lounges, dominated by a tower left over from the former factory. In the evening, the pool patio transitions into a lounge.

Three spaces are available for private functions of up to 30 attendees. Bar Keep is a private lounge and dining area that will evolve into an upscale retail space. The Myriad Swim Club is located under the tower and can accommodate a mix of high and low-top seating. The Myriad Swim Club Firepit, adjacent to the pool, can seat up to 12 people.

The Team

Weyland Ventures and Common Bond Hotel Collection partnered with WorK Architecture to recreate the space from the ground up with respect to its past. The team sourced artwork from local creators JD Dotson and Cletus Wilcox for the lobby, guestrooms and corridors.

Common Bond Hotel Collection, a subsidiary of Weyland Ventures, assembled a team of creatives led by Ashlyn Ackerman, head of design for Weyland Ventures, to develop identities for each of its properties based on its location, community and history. Many of the Myriad's team live locally in the Highlands.
