South Dakota hotel completes renovation

The Deadwood Mountain Grand in Deadwood, S.D., has officially completed its renovation. The former Homestake Mining Co. ore processing plant, first opened in 1906, became Deadwood's only large-scale event center and casino in 2011 and is adjacent to the renovated hotel.

The upgrades include 93 guestrooms and five suites as well as common guest areas such as the lobby and restaurant. The updated spaces, created by Ste Marie Design through research conducted in conjunction with Deadwood History Inc., pay tribute to Deadwood’s rustic and industrial past, while pairing it with contemporary artwork, materials and finishes. Materials like brass, bronze and wood are highlighted throughout the lobby and guestrooms, honoring Deadwood’s history of goldmining. Fabrics like velvet, suede, leather and sherpa in eclectic tones can be seen throughout the property.

The lobby has historic photos sourced from Deadwood’s History Inc., two seating areas centered by stone fireplaces and ambient layers of lighting. All check-in desks are designed to look like old mining carts.

Guest elevators have superimposed graphics on historic photos. Guestrooms have weathered wood-like wallpaper, plaid and velvet fabrics and materials like stone, marble and bronze. Bathrooms have a letter written by Sarah Sawyer to W.E. Adams—of the influential Adams family—enlarged with a custom watercolor overlay as a wall covering. The brass illuminated mirrors and the shelving detail on the vanities mimic gold mining pans, again highlighting the building’s past.

Public spaces at the hotel include a heated indoor pool, hot tub, fitness center and gift shop.
