Salamander to rebrand, manage D.C. Mandarin Oriental after sale

Middleburg, Va.-based Salamander Hotels & Resorts is set to rebrand and manage the 373-room Mandarin Oriental, Washington D.C. 

According to the Washington Business Journal, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is selling the property for $139 million to private equity real estate manager Henderson Park effective Sept. 8. The following day, Salamander will take over management of the hotel. Mandarin Oriental has owned the property since it opened in 2004. 

The transaction is the latest of high-profile hotel deals in D.C. The Trump International Hotel, Washington, D.C., rebranded as a Waldorf Astoria, while the Mayflower, the W Washington, D.C., and the Graham Hotel have also sold in the past two years.

Salamander operates hotels and resorts in Charleston, S.C.; Aspen, Colo.; Palm Harbor, Fla.; Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Rendezvous Bay, Anguilla. In a statement, Salamander founder and CEO Sheila Johnson said the company will develop "synergies" between the D.C. property and its flagship Middleburg resort, which are about 45 miles from each other. 

Mandarin Oriental operates three dozen hotels and seven residential properties, with another 25 hotels and 15 residences in its pipeline set to open over the next five years.
