Mesh in the modern age: Lighting designs using metal mesh

Several lighting companies are incorporating mesh into their lamps and fixtures, using perforated and woven sheets of metal. Troy Lighting, Corbett Lighting, Hudson Valley Lighting and Uplight Group have interpretations of modern mesh lighting.

Impression by Troy Lighting is a modernist centerpiece comprised of perforated, handworked iron squares. The light alternates solid sheet and perforated handworked iron squares in a circular configuration. There is an interplay of solid and punctured textures with graphite and satin nickel finishes that supplies a rich contrast. Hidden light sources disseminate a deep, warm glow that spreads onto the sides of the iron squares. It is available as a 10 or 14-light pendant and as a coordinating sconce.

Pulse by Corbett Lighting is a sculptural design made of handcrafted iron mesh finished in gold leaf. Folded elements fit together like a puzzle, creating handcrafted iron “ruffles”. The dynamic and illuminated sculpture is topped in a gold leaf, offset by a stainless stem. It features a dimmable LED light source, and is offered in three pendant sizes as well as a semi-flush and a wall sconce.

Vestal by Hudson Valley Lighting has perforated metal shades. Vestal marries Machine Age accents with the classic architecture of a vaulted lantern. It is framed by a black textured iron cage. The pendant has curved arches. It is available in aged brass and polished nickel finishes.

Gibbs by Hudson Valley Lighting has a Machine Age aesthetic. Gibbs’ shade and candle cups are one soft square. The sconce’s long exposed filament bulb suffuses its warm glow through a perforated metal shade. Gibbs is offered in aged brass, old bronze and polished nickel

Zatellite by Uplight Group was handmade by Filipino artisans using galvanized iron, a malleable material. It has an intricately woven sphere of iron, and is available in either black or Florentine. It is offered in three sizes.

Urban by Uplight Group has a basket-like mesh woven from strands of galvanized iron. It is part of the Schema collections, and was handmade in the Philippines. It includes delicate-looking dark gray wire shades crafted of iron. Urban is available in two sizes.
