Outdoor furnishings that last

Summer is fast approaching, and hotels will be preparing to open up their outdoor areas. Here are some tips for maintaining outdoor furniture for many seasons.

1. Find the right materials

Gar Products uses genuine teak wood, faux teak and resin for its outdoor furniture. Michelle Tully, the company’s director of customer service, said synthetic wood and resins are both durable materials that can stand up to the elements and maintain their colors. “I don’t know many things that would stain either of those [materials],” she said.

2. Keep mold at bay

Tenjam’s Splash Series of pool furniture lets water recirculate through the product core, which reduces the potential of algae growth. Preventing the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew helps lengthen the lifespan of the chair.

3. Consider synthetics

Tully said synthetic teak can be found in Gar Products’ tabletops and chair frames. “Faux teak gives it the look of genuine teak without the maintenance,” she explained, noting that genuine teak must be regularly oiled. The wood also develops a patina over time, causing the color to gradually change.

4. Create shade

Even though their fabrics are UV-resistant, indoor/outdoor furniture company Danao Living notes on its website that “prolonged exposure to sunlight will eventually impact on the strength and color of the fiber.” Especially in hot climates, the company recommends creating shady spots by arranging awnings, umbrellas or plants to block the strongest light.
