Cancun, Texas & Georgia hotels announce opening plans

Even during a travel downturn, development is continuing apace, and several new properties are getting ready to open in the coming months.

Mexico

In Mexico, the new Planet Hollywood Beach Resort Cancun is set to open on Dec. 15.

Located in the resort enclave of Costa Mujeres, just north of Cancun’s Hotel Zone, the all-inclusive resort will have 898 suites, 11 restaurants and modern wellness features as well as curated entertainment-themed experiences and authentic Hollywood memorabilia from 40 cult classics, including a ’95 Mitsubishi Eclipse from “Fast and the Furious.”

Activities on-site include four swimming pools, a lazy river, Shipwreck Cove and Jurassic Splash Park, a FlowRider surf simulator, Labyrinth, a mini-golf course, the Planet Play Adventure Park, the Stars Kids Club and the PH Teens Club.

The resort will also debut the first-ever Adult Scene, a new adults-only resort-within-a-resort concept for guests aged 18 and up. This space will have 332 suites, its own private beachfront and pool area, complete with a swim-up bar and waiter service, in addition to two specialty restaurants reserved exclusively for Adult Scene guests.

Texas

In Fort Worth, Texas, the Hotel Drover is slated to open early next year as part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection.

The 200-room hotel will have a range of room options including oversized soaking tubs, fireplace suites and bunkhouse rooms. The hotel's two acres of outdoor living space includes a pool, flagstone courtyards, multiple water features, fire pits, a music stage and outdoor games. The property also has more than 12,000 square feet of meeting space and shops.

“Hotel Drover pays homage to the Stockyards’ National Historic District in Fort Worth and harnesses the true spirit of the drover to create a new legacy for the Stockyards,” said GM Kristin Assad. “We are building a place where simple pleasures and one-of-a-kind experiences blend effortlessly to become special memories. From sunset strolls on horseback to whiskey tastings and s'mores kits, we have special touches for everyone during their stay.”

Atlanta

In Georgia, the Kimpton Sylvan Hotel is set to open in early 2021 in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood. An adaptive reuse of a 1950s-era residential property, the Kimpton Sylvan Hotel will celebrate the midcentury modern design scheme of the original exterior.

The reimagined hotel will include 216 guestrooms, a living room lobby, a private pool and more than 4,000 square feet of meetings and events space.

The Sylvan's dining programming will include a ground-level restaurant with pedestrian access off of East Paces Ferry Road. The 175-seat restaurant will have “an old Hollywood vibe,” an elevated bar and outdoor patio. After this restaurant opens, the tucked-away, ground-level garden bar and ninth floor rooftop lounge will follow.
