IHG opens onsen resort in Beppu, Japan

IHG has opened the ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa in the Oita Prefecture in Japan.

The resort incorporates traditional Japanese hot springs culture and has two, large outdoor onsens, each with Beppu stones placed to create a waterfall effect.

Private rooms offer a modern onsen experience complete with a day bed, bathroom and minimalist design. There also are an infinity pool, spa with five treatment rooms and two massage rooms with a Jacuzzi.

The hotel has 89 guestrooms (some with private open-air baths on the terrace) as well as five restaurants and bars.

The resort is one of four IHG immersive resorts to open in 2019. The InterContinental Hayman Island Resort opened in July and the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort and InterContinental Phuket Resort will open in September.

“We are extremely proud to open the first international luxury hot spring resort and spa in Beppu,” said Hans Heijligers, head of Japan, IHG, and IHG ANA Hotels Group Japan. Stéphane Massarini, general manager of the hotel, said the opening would be a “new era in travel for Beppu,” adding the resort "was designed to embody the history of the city, bringing to life a meaningful connection to the surrounds and offering a memorable stay for both locals and international guests alike.”
