IHG has opened Kimpton El Castelar, a 34-room boutique hotel, which is the result of an adaptive reuse project in Mexico City's Polanco neighborhood.
Located in the historic Roel Building, the property originally opened in 1940 and was designed by architect Francisco J. Serrano. The hotel is part of IHG Hotels & Resorts' luxury and lifestyle portfolio. The Mexican hotel is located near Avenida Presidente Masaryk, Auditorio Nacional, Chapultepec Castle and the National Museum of Anthropology in the Lincoln Park area of Polanco.
“Kimpton Castelar is an authentic addition to the spirit of Mexico City,” Alejandro Gallegos, general manager of Kimpton El Castelar, said in a statement. “Our intention is for guests to use the hotel as their homebase as they discover the hidden treasures of the trendy Polanquito neighborhood.”
The project sought to retain the building's historic exterior while introducing guest accommodations, private outdoor terraces and a rooftop pool. Guestrooms feature locally sourced furnishings, artwork by Mexican artists, wood flooring, cement tile accents and natural materials. Most guestrooms also include soaking tubs.
The hotel offers several Kimpton brand amenities, including the daily Kimpton Kickstart coffee and tea service, the evening Kimpton Social Hour with complimentary beverages and light bites, complimentary bicycles, in-room yoga mats and pet-friendly accommodations.
Kimpton El Castelar is the brand's second property in Mexico City's Polanco district, joining Kimpton Virgilio, which opened in 2024. Both hotels occupy restored historic apartment buildings. The opening expands Kimpton's global portfolio to 87 hotels, with an additional 67 properties in development.
“As Kimpton hotels continue to grow in our Mexico and Latin American region, we carry a true sense of excitement with us,” added Leanne Harwood, SVP and managing director of luxury and lifestyle at IHG Hotels & Resorts.
