Hyatt Centric Key West collects one ton of aluminum

The Hyatt Centric Key West Resort and Spa in Key West, Fla., is celebrating its ongoing commitment to sustainability as it marks a milestone achievement of collecting one ton of aluminum from the property and surrounding community.

The initiative is part of the Hyatt Centric’s goal of becoming a true single-use plastic-free resort. In light of Americans sending 38 billion plastic water bottles to landfills every year, this hidden waterfront oasis off Duval Street has instituted circular sustainability efforts in the form the Infinite Bottle Project, a partnership with Proud Source Water and Replenysh.

This is the first and only circularity platform with material traceability, which reclaims and recycles aluminum throughout the Key West region so it can be reused. Their mission is to protect and preserve the Florida Reef (also known as the Great Florida Reef), the only living coral barrier reef in North America. The data from the collection is also available in real-time to watch this exciting movement as it happens.

Additionally, the resort has been implementing new environmentally friendly guest experiences from sourcing local through partnerships with small businesses to installing electric charging stations, eliminating the use of plastic straws, providing amenities in bulk, updating entry to be mobile only and offering bike rentals to offset CO2 emissions. These efforts were recently recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) while the Hyatt Centric completed its sustainability certification with Green Key Global. The certificate is the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry.
