STR: U.S. hotel performance improves in March

In March, the U.S. hotel industry reported higher performance from the previous month, according to the latest data from STR.

For the month (percentage change from March 2019):

  • Occupancy: 65.3 percent (-4 percent)
  • Average daily rate: $158.17 (+19.1 percent)
  • Revenue per available room: $103.35 (+14.4 percent)

In comparison, for February (percentage change from February 2019):

  • Occupancy: 60 percent (-2.8 percent)
  • ADR: $152.01 (+17.7 percent)
  • RevPAR: $91.22 (+14.3 percent)

Top Markets

Among STR's top 25 markets, Tampa experienced the highest occupancy level (84 percent), which was down 3.8 percent from the market’s 2019 benchmark.  

Markets with the lowest occupancy for the month included Minneapolis (53.3 percent), Detroit (58.6 percent) and Philadelphia (58.6 percent). San Francisco reported the steepest decline in occupancy when compared with 2019 (-17.1 percent).

Reflecting continued improvement in business travel and groups, the top 25 markets showed higher occupancy and ADR than all other markets.
