STR: U.S. hotels report all-time monthly highs in July

The U.S. hotel industry reported all-time monthly highs in average daily rate and revenue per available room on a nominal basis, according to July 2021 data from STR. Occupancy was 69.6 percent, down 5.5 percent compared to July 2019. Average daily rate was $143.30, up 6 percent from 2019, while revenue per available room was $99.71, up 0.2 percent.

When adjusted for inflation, the ADR and RevPAR levels were lower than the all-time highs recorded in 2019. On an absolute basis, occupancy was the highest for any month since August 2019.

Top Markets

Among the top 25 markets, Oahu Island, Hawaii, experienced the highest occupancy level (82 percent), which was still down 6.9 percent from the market’s 2019 benchmark. The market also recorded the highest ADR ($258.65) and RevPAR ($212).

Tampa, Fla., saw the highest occupancy increase in over 2019 (up 3.7 percent to 76.1 percent).

Markets with the lowest occupancy for the month included Washington, D.C., (55.9 percent) and Minneapolis (57.1 percent). San Francisco/San Mateo reported the steepest decline in occupancy when compared with 2019 (down 31.7 percent to 57.5 percent).

Overall, the top 25 markets showed lower occupancy but higher ADR than all other markets.
