California hotel upgrades guestrooms, lawn spaces

In California’s San Diego area, the Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, a Noble House Hotels & Resorts property owned by Pebblebrook Hotel Trust, has completed an upgrade to its 210 guestrooms and suites. Developed by design firm EDG, the reimagination of Estancia La Jolla’s accommodations combines elements of casual comfort and nostalgia with contemporary style to inject new energy into the property.

Estancia La Jolla’s redesigned guestrooms are a juxtaposition of past and present, blending nods to the property's equestrian heritage with modern accents and finishes to complement the sense of place. The entryway has matte tile flooring—inspired by Mexican encaustic cement tile—with a bold pattern and color that transitions into a patterned carpet. Interiors use a color palette of earth tones and pops of color inspired by the tile flooring accented by wood furniture, finishes and textured fabrics.

A new banquette seating area has a settee covered with a deep blue, denim-like fabric with leather strap accents that recall early handmade saddlery. The beds have old-world headboards with nailhead trim. Custom wall coverings, wood dressers with curved edges and leather-fronted bedside tables help each room feel tailored.

The revitalization of Estancia La Jolla’s accommodations complements other recent enhancements to the property experience, including the introduction of one new and the revitalization of five existing lawn spaces. Totaling nearly 10,000 collective square feet, Estancia La Jolla’s six lawns are meant to serve different needs:

  • Garden Courtyard: Totaling 3,136 square feet, Estancia La Jolla’s Garden Courtyard is the centerpiece of the property, with botanicals and accented by Spanish-style architecture.
  • Olive Lawn: At 1,664 square feet, the Olive Lawn is adjacent to the property’s signature restaurant, Mustangs & Burros, and is surrounded by olive trees and blossoms.
  • Hacienda Lawn: One of Estancia La Jolla’s more intimate lawn spaces, the 1,400-square-foot Hacienda Lawn can host breakout sessions and group gatherings.
  • Agave Lawn: Totaling 1,400 square feet, the Agave Lawn is suited for intimate ceremonies and smaller group events.
  • Caretaker’s Lawn: Surrounded by historic adobe buildings and large cacti, this 1,140 square foot space evokes a Spanish hacienda setting.
  • Mariposa Lawn: The newest addition to Estancia La Jolla’s collection of outdoor spaces, the 1,000-square-foot Mariposa Lawn is adjacent to the Learning Theater and is surrounded by greenery and florals.

Estancia La Jolla’s lawn project has reduced the amount of irrigation required for grounds maintenance, further supporting the property’s sustainability initiatives. The property also recently introduced an apiary in collaboration with Alvéole to aid native pollination and ultimately create a sustainable source of honey and an educational opportunity for property guests. Other new highlights include herb and butterfly gardens and a floral installation by Native Poppy at the property’s Greenfinch Bar.
