Sacramento hotel kicks off public space upgrade

The Citizen Hotel, a member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection in the Cal-West Insurance Building in downtown Sacramento, Calif., is set to begin the next phase of a multimillion-dollar enhancement project ahead of the building’s 100th anniversary in 2025.

On the heels of a recent reimagining of the hotel’s guestrooms, suites and meeting space, the project will update the lobby space and second-floor mezzanine-level Scandal Lounge. The renovation will take two months and the property is set to remain open throughout.

Interior architecture studio Indidesign, responsible for the previous phase of the hotel’s renovation, has been brought back to evoke the building’s history. The scope includes the integration of a more contemporary color palette, furnishings and fixtures.

The revamped common areas will complement the newly redesigned guestrooms with the same aesthetic, using the muted jewel-toned color palette introduced in 2021. The lobby, which will retain the communal-library feel of the existing space, will be lightened up with a fresh color palette of white walls with accents of gray and teal. Seating options will include wingback chairs in deep shades of emerald velour, modern swivel chairs in grass and gray tones and sofas in royal blue. The walls will have bookcases and a chandelier at the second floor level will draw the gaze upwards. A new vintage beverage cart with coffee and refreshments will encourage gathering and conversation.

The Scandal Lounge, the centerpiece of the second floor, will get a new carpet and hardwood flooring, velvet banquette seating and pendant lighting. The hotel’s artwork collection will be displayed on a focal wall featuring existing political cartoons, and a bespoke three-dimensional art piece comprised of wire net and vintage typewriter keys will be in the lobby. A custom art installation along the staircase walls featuring graphic art on vintage books will celebrate the legacy of the building and the city.

The Citizen Hotel, Autograph Collection is managed by Evolution Lifestyle, an operating division of Aimbridge Hospitality.
