Updated classic: Louis Poulsen relaunches Arne Jacobsen lamps

In 1960, the SAS Royal Hotel opened as the first real high-rise in Copenhagen, Denmark. Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ lamp for the hotel, and in honor of the 60th anniversary of the property—now the Radisson Collection Hotel, Royal Copenhagen—local firm Louis Poulsen Lighting is relaunching several additions to the AJ family.

Jacobsen originally designed AJ Royal, which at the time was simply called the AJ Pendant, for the hotel. It could be found above the tables in the snack bar, behind the atrium in the lounge on the first floor and in the Panorama Lounge on the 21st floor. Loius Poulsen is reintroducing the AJ Royal pendant lamp in honor of the anniversary in three sizes and in two colors (black and white). Its design ensures even downward lighting and its muted upward light provides a pleasant ambience.

The AJ Lamp that was designed specifically for the hotel was originally in a stainless-steel colorway throughout the space. All versions of the AJ Lamp are being relaunched in stainless steel, which reflects their surroundings, emphasizes their minimalist and distinctive shape and design, and accentuates illumination. The collection includes a table lamp, a mini table lamp, a floor lamp and a wall lamp.

The original AJ Table Lamp designed for the hotel was developed in a smaller size than the current table lamp version. To commemorate the anniversary, Louis Poulsen is reintroducing the AJ Mini Table Lamp in the original size Jacobsen created for the hotel. This new mini size joins the collection in all 14 available colorways.

Lastly, Louis Poulsen also will release three new special edition colors that will only be available in 2020: original gray, pale rose and ultra blue. The limited-edition colors will be available for the table lamp, mini table lamp, floor lamp and wall lamp styles.
